Wm. E. Howell On This Day In Oregon

"Mr. Wm. E. Howell, of Albany, showed us yesterday one of the neatest, most simple, but at the same time, useful little inventions which it has been our privilege to inspect for many a long day.

This contrivance was invented by Dr. E. O. Smith of Albany. The invention is a steel permanent attachment pencil sharpener, with diagonal knives cutting the wood away from the lead in a smooth and uniform manner...Mr. Howell and Dr. Smith each own 1/2 interest in the invention. In a short time Dr. Smith will start east for the purpose of having a large invoice of these pencil sharpeners manufactured."
