"Mr. Wm. E. Howell, of Albany, showed us yesterday one of the neatest, most simple, but at the same time, useful little inventions which it has been our privilege to inspect for many a long day. This contrivance was invented by Dr. E. O. Smith of Albany. The invention is a steel permanent attachment pencil sharpener, with diagonal knives cutting the wood away from the lead in a smooth and uniform manner...Mr. Howell and Dr. Smith each own 1/2 interest in the invention. In a short time Dr. Smith will start east for the purpose of having a large invoice of these pencil sharpeners manufactured."
