On this day in 1908 the Burns City Council ordered all gambling stopped in saloons and an end to card games for drinks. The council stated the step was to put an end to the immigration of undesirable people from surrounding counties that had gone dry. In addition, wagering on games of pool or gambling of any kind at the county fair in the fall was declared illegal. As a result, a six-day celebration scheduled for July was canceled because saloon keepers withdrew their support.
