On this day in 1850 the steamer Columbia, first to be built on the river of that name, made her trial run and thusly inaugurated a new era in transportation history of the Oregon Territory. Built and commanded by Capt. James Frost at Astoria, she is expected to run between Astoria and Portland and Oregon City at a predicted running time of 26 hours between the coast port and Oregon City.
