first brick house On This Day In Oregon

The George Gay House was the first brick house in Oregon, and first west of the Rocky Mountains. Built by agriculturist George Gay in 1841-42 on his farm near Wheatland (north of Salem).

The bricks were molded and baked on the premises. The structure was 32 by 22 feet, 14 feet high, with a large fireplace at either end adorned by woodwork, hand-carving and dresses. The south wall of the house was on the Yamhill-Polk county line, a circumstance which dated from the act of the Provisional Government on this day in 1843.
