The George Gay House was the first brick house in Oregon, and first west of the Rocky Mountains. Built by agriculturist George Gay in 1841-42 on his farm near Wheatland (north of Salem). The bricks were molded and baked on the premises. The structure was 32 by 22 feet, 14 feet high, with a large fireplace at either end adorned by woodwork, hand-carving and dresses. The south wall of the house was on the Yamhill-Polk county line, a circumstance which dated from the act of the Provisional Government on this day in 1843.
