On this day in 1788 rough seas prevented Captain John Mears from approaching the Oregon coastline in his effort to determine whether the body of water he had named Deception Bay was not in reality, the mouth of a great river. Captain Mears, commanding the British vessel, Felice, named Cape Disappointment but did not believe the St. Roc, as the Spanish called the Columbia River, existed.
