On this day in 1895 the new Gladstone Auditorium was the site of the opening Chautauqua Assembly. The auditorium was completed the night before and proved to be everything that was expected of it. Over 1,000 in attendance listened to several talks and responded enthusiastically to singing by the Salem Ladies Quartet.
