On this day in 1849, the First Session of the Legislature of the newly organized Territory of Oregon was held. Governor Joseph Lane, who has been most active since his arrival at Oregon City, has in little more than four months seen to it that the machinery of government has been perfected. First and most pressing of the problems to be met by the present Legislature is the matter of providing funds for carrying on the many expenses of the territory. It is also believed that an election will be called to select a delegate to Congress. Finally it will be necessary to enact the Organic Law, the many basic statues by which Oregon is to be governed. So complex are the problems to be solved that it may be necessary for the Legislature to sit for more than a week.
