Mazamas On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1894, the Mazamas, named after the Spanish word for the sure-footed Rocky Mountain Goat, came into official existence. Their organizational meeting was held at the summit of Mt. Hood.

Of the 193 (155 men, 38 women) who made the ascent, 105 became charter members of the climbing club. The planned banquet on the summit had to be abandoned for the "old mountaineers'" game of run-for-your-life...as frequently happens when the weather turns for the worse on Mt. Hood.
