Alexander Mackenzie On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1793 Alexander Mackenzie reached the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Bella Coola River and became the first white man to cross the continent by land north of Mexico.

With Mackenzie was Alex Mackay and a party made up by the Northwest Company. Mackenzie's journey was made under the most difficult conditions and the party was endangered by Indians and violent and tumultuous rivers down which they attempted to canoe in their effort to reach the sea.

Mackenzie's feat follows by just over a year the discovery of the Columbia River by Captain Robert Gray of Boston.
