On this afternoon in 1890 Marshal Ross succeeded in capturing and getting confessions from the boys who had been burning barns in Salem in recent months, eight having been burned by them. The boys were ages 9,12, and 13. They burned the barns for fun, being anxious to see the excitement of seeing the engines make a run. It was decided to give the boys no punishment, being so young and not realizing the enormity of the crime, and they were given into the custody of their parents for punishment. The younger boys said the older hired them to do the jobs, paying them ten cents for one fire, twenty for another and a white rabbit for a third.
