On This day in 1902, the Portland Evening Journal which was established March 10, 1902, was taken over by C.S. Jackson and its name changed to The Oregon Journal. With a policy of "to be free, fearless and independent", the newpaper took an early lead in Oregon's Road Program with the slogan, "Get Oregon out of the mud."
