Angus B. Bowmer On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1935 the Oregon Shakespearean Festival opened with Taming of the Shrew before a crowd of 700 in Ashland's outdoor theater.

On an original Elizabethan stage, director Angus B. Bowmer and his company of talented young actors presented an authentic production of one of the Bard's most popular comedies. Among the players, all of them outstanding, special praise went to Roberta Nourse as Katherine, Robert Stedman as a lusty and enthusiastic Petruchio, and Doreen Leverette as a charmingly demure Bianca.

The new festival, planned as an annual affair, got off to a successful start both artistically and financially.
