On this day in 1867, the first documented climb of Mt. Hood was made by Henry Pittock, Prof. L.J. Powell, Wm. S. Buckley, W. Lyman Chittenden, and James G. Deardorff. The ascent took five and a half hours from Timberline to the summit. Pittock reported climbing 30 feet down into one of several fumaroles or steam vents seen during the climb where he observed heavy deposits of yellow sulfur dust. The descent took only two hours. Nothing was said about sunburn but it was not unusual for early climbing parties to suffer from both snowblindness and extreme burn.
