George Thomas On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1878 Oregon telephone service had its beginning when a fifteen year old operator, George Thomas, went into the back room of Western Union office at First and Ankeny Streets to complete Portland's first telephone call. The American Telephone District Telephone Company had 32 subscribers on that Friday. Until 1884, all of the operators employed were teen-aged boys.
