forest fire On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1935, "a small logger...firedup (sic) his donkey engine to move a huge log. The log, grinding through the dry woods, rubbed into the spark that whelped the worst forest fire Oregon has ever known."

So read an August 14, 1958 article in the Oregon Journal recounting the Tillamook Burn, a historic conflagration that resulted in the destruction of 311,000 acres and 11 billion board feet of lumber, equaling all the timber cut in the entire US the previous year.

Ashes rose 40,000 feet in the air, piling up two feet deep along the northern Oregon coast and falling like snow in the Willamette Valley. Total damage was estimated at $375 million (1933).
