Sneddon On This Day In Oregon

"We left upper or lower Soda, I do not know which, and traveled all day until nearly dark over the slipperyest and muddiest roads, and up and down hill all day...We pulled into the ranch tonight at dusk and had to eat supper with a candle light. We were all wet and cold and cranky so as soon as we ate our supper we climbed up in the hay and went to sleep..."

From the Diary of Mae Stone Putnam Sneddon coming over the Santiam Pass at the age of 12 (in a covered wagon).
