Malheur Refuge On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1908 by executive order of President Theodore Roosevelt, the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was established.

Setting aside 95,155 acres with thousands more added since, this refuge is one of the country's largest waterfowl nesting grounds, has recorded more than 230 species of birds and is the habitat for over 50 species of mammals. Included in the refuge are Malheur, Mud and Harney Lakes, the Pete French Ranch, and the Blitzen Valley.
