On this day in 1853 Lt. James reclaimed the Columbia River and adjacent territory for the United States. Arriving in the sloop of war Ontario with orders to "re-occupy Astoria or Fort George", Biddle found the British conciliatory, conceding repossession of Astoria with no resistance.
