On this day in 1867, the first iron was produced by the Oswego Iron Company. Plans for constructing a blast furnace and iron foundry at Oswego were formulated in 1865. The operation used locally mined ore and charcoal fuel. Two pigs were cast for J.W. Trullinger to be used as street markers. One is still at the corner of Ladd and Durham in Lake Oswego and the other is owned by the Oregon Historical Society. The operation continued with intermittent shutdowns until 1908. In 1929 the furnaces and foundry were dismantled.
