On this day in 1859 two horsemen paid twenty-five cents each to the Lindsay Applegate Family and became the first customers on the Siskiyou Toll Road. The route over the Siskiyou Mountains brought in $3,738 for the year of 1864...a handsome income in those days. The Applegates sold the toll road privileges to James Thornton in 1871, who in turn sold it to the third and final owners, the Dollarhide Family. In 1913 Jackson County bought the toll road rights from the Dollarhides for $1,600. The road is presently part of the Pacific Highway.
