On this day in 1919 nearly 20,000 members of various Oregon trade unions marched through downtown Portland. Marchers carried banners urging adoption of the Plumb Plan for joint ownership of railroads by employees, operators and the federal government, and demanded the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Russia. Ex-servicemen in a variety of uniforms were prominent in the enormous parade.
