On this day in 1902 it was reported that: "Astoria commercial fishermen have refused to accept a one-cent per pound rate for fall salmon and now it appears that only two canneries will operate, the Megler Cannery at Brookfield and the Columbia River Packers' Combine, and that these will be forced to depend upon their own gear for fish. The fishermen have given out that they will not accept less than two cents a pound for fish and failing to receive that price, they will not take their boats out."
