On this day in 1939 the beginning of war in Europe initiated by Germany's unexpected invasion of Poland caused a flurry of panic buying among Oregon housewives. Storeowners throughout the state reported a run on sugar, flour, coffee, and canned goods despite reassurances from the food industry that ample stocks were on hand.
