On this day in 1854 Oregon celebrated its railway connection with the rest of the Union when Northern Pacific's last spike was driven at Deer Lodge, Montana. Credited was Henry Villard, whose genius and perseverance succeeded where others before him had fallen short. The City of Portland, already the metropolis of the northwest with a population of nearly 40,000, was especially jubilant. The rail connection meant increased access to markets for Oregon agricultural products.
