cannonade On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1846 the U.S. schooner Shark sank while attempting to sail out through the mouth of the Columbia River. Cannon Beach is named for the cannon or "cannonade" that washed ashore here in the weeks following the shipwreck. A portion of the ship's hull with mounted guns came ashore five miles shouth of Ecola Point. A single cannon was dragged above high water where it lay for years, giving the beach area its name.
