On this day in 1918 a small group of Eugene residents, mostly members of the local Patriotic League, burned nearly $1,000 dollars worth of San Francisco Examiners. On the previous night, the group had destroyed several Hearst magazine publications to the lusty cheers of hundreds of spectators who joined in the singing, "Keep the home fires burning." The magazines and newspapers were burned in a show of strong feelings for the alleged disloyalty of William Randolph Hearst toward Eugene newsdealers and several citizens.
