Olin Warner On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1888 the Skidmore Fountain, acknowledged as an exquisite work of art, was dedicated. The fountain, at the intersection of S.W. First and Pine Street in Portland, honors the memory of Stephen G. Skidmore.

Skidmore was an early Portland pharmacist whose will provided $5,000 for a public fountain at that location. Design and construction of the fountain was by sculptor Olin Warner. The balance of the fountain's $18,000 cost was donated by friend and colleagues of Skidmore.
