horse trader On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1851 Aaron Rose traded a horse for a land claim at the junction of Deer Creek and the Umpqua River. Here he bought and sold horses, farmed and operated three businesses; a general store, a hotel and a butcher shop.

On his farm he laid out the town of Roseburg which was named the county seat of Douglas County on March 9, 1854, by a vote of the people. Prior to the balloting, the voters were lavishly entertained by Mr. Rose.
