Governor Charles Martin On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1937 President Franklin Roosevelt used his visit to the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River to defend his much-criticized public power policy. The President insisted that the $51 million price tag of Bonneville would be returned many times over in "improvements of navigation and transportation, the cheapening of electric power and the distribution of this power..."

Following these remarks, Mr. Roosevelt pressed a button thereby starting the dam's first generator. Sharing the platform with him was Oregon Governor Charles Martin who did not always share the President's views on public power.
