On this day in 1811 at the Port of Astoria, the twenty-five ton schooner Dolly was launched and became the first vessel built on the Columbia River. After her frame arrived on the Tonquin, workers at Fort Astoria, few of whom were experienced shipwrights, constructed the vessel. Experienced sailors complained she was badly put together and subsequent use as a coasting vessel by the Pacific Fur Company proved them right. She was originally named for the wife of John Jacob Astor but rechristened Jane by Donald McTavish of the North West Company in 1814.
