Katherine Eloisa Rockwell On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1876 Katherine Eloisa Rockwell, otherwise known as "Klondike Kate", the famous dancer and singer of the Yukon Gold Rush days was born. She reportedly received up to $750 a night for her performances.

In the 1950's, she and her husband moved to Sweet Home were the onetime dance hall queen continued to create conversation in her own colorful way. If she wasn't dressing up for a holiday parade, she might be seen rolling her own cigarette with the deftness of a veteran cowhand. Kate performed offstage until she was 80 and passed away on February 21, 1957.
