On this day in 1885 the Oregonian reprinted a copy of the letter Lincoln had written to President Taylor which declined the offer to be appointed Governor of the Oregon Territory. In 1849 upon the resignation of General Joseph Lane, President Zachary Taylor offered the governorship of the Oregon Territorial Government to Abraham Lincoln. This appointment, as well as an earlier one to the territory as Secretary was declined. Lincoln is said to have declined the appointment in large part because his wife objected to moving west where the rigors of life did not appeal to her. In 1860 Lincoln was elected 16th President of the United States.
