On this day in 1854 in Eugene City, District Court indicted Mason Benson for keeping a grocery open on Sunday. During Oregon territorial days, a law was enacted that enforced Sunday closure for shopkeepers. Benson's fine of $10 did not seem to address the fact that he had no license to sell spirits.
