covered wagon On This Day In Oregon

The following is an excerpt from an 1843 diary kept by a pioneer traveler en route to Oregon. The journey began on the Ohio River in October 1843 and did not end until the party arrived at Oregon City, December of 1844. The diary was found in Benton County and failed to include the writer's name...only a record of his long, arduous journey:

"Tuesday, October 10, 1843: We loaded our wagon and rolled out on the road. After all the pondering of hope and doubts, we are finally on our way to Oregon. We stayed one night with friends. I think they envy us but lack the courage to follow."
