On this day in 1864 the Oregon State Legislature created two new counties in eastern Oregon; Grant and Union, the first being composed of parts of Wasco and Umatilla and the latter carved from existing Baker County. Little opposition occurred in either house, although a few southern sympathizers in the house objected to honoring General Grant and vainly attempted to substitute the name Granite. La Grande was named county seat of Union County and it was thought that Canyon City would be Grant's county seat.
