On this day in 1856 the mouth of the Columbia River was made considerably less hazardous for incoming ships when the lighthouse at Cape Disappointment was completed and the lantern lighted. Prior to this, navigators relied on cut trees and white flags indicating the Columbia's crossing by day and by bonfires at night. Guided by such primitive markers, many a vessel was unable to complete the crossing.
