University of Oregon On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1876 the first classes at the new University of Oregon were scheduled to begin within the week after the examination and classification of students.

177 students were in attendance under the tutorial guidance of five faculty members. University President John W. Johnson will serve as full professor along with Dr. Thomas Condon, the well-known geologist, and professor Mark Bailey. Mrs. Mary Spiller, assisted by Miss Mary Stone, directed the preparatory department.
