On this day in 1888 Anton Wirth, a coastal pioneer nurseryman, reported to the Coos Bay News: "A new apple, from the seed of the Gurney seedling, has been raised by Robert Rooke on the North Fork of Coos River. At the request of Mr. Rooke that I should name it, I give it the name 'Coos River Beauty' as it is a beauty in the true sense of the word. The tree is a free grower with healthy foliage, a heavy annual bearer of always fair-sized apples, no matter how heavy loaded the tree may be, and holds up the fruit well without breaking a limb."
