On this day in 1818 the United States and Great Britain by treaty agreement, began their joint occupancy of the Oregon country. This treaty provided for "all territories and their waters claimed by either power, west of the Rocky Mountains" to "be free and open to vessels, citizens and subjects of both for 10 years." The treaty was renewed and finally terminated in June 1846, when the U.S. was conceded sole right to the country south of 49 degrees.
