Tillamook Light House On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1879 four skilled quarrymen were placed on Tillamook Rock, a 120-foot basaltic mass situated 20 miles south of the Columbia River Bar and a mile and a half offshore. After the seas calmed the following day, another four quarrymen were landed on the rugged crag with construction equipment and provisions.

At the end of 575 working days complicated by battering gales, flooding seas, cold living conditions and encounters with aggressive sea lions, a remarkable engineering feat was accomplished--the construction of the Tillamook Light House, one of the loneliest light stations in the whole of the Pacific Ocean.
