On this day in 1858 the first steamship on the upper Columbia River, the Colonel Wright, was launched at the mouth of the Deschutes river. Like most pioneers on a steamboat route, she made a fortune for her owners before other boats came to compete for the trade. The Colonel Wright carried freight for Fort Walla Walla from Celilo at the rate of $80 a ton, making each week three round trips with a full load each time.
