Colonel Wright On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1858 the first steamship on the upper Columbia River, the Colonel Wright, was launched at the mouth of the Deschutes river.

Like most pioneers on a steamboat route, she made a fortune for her owners before other boats came to compete for the trade. The Colonel Wright carried freight for Fort Walla Walla from Celilo at the rate of $80 a ton, making each week three round trips with a full load each time.
