On this day in 1902 the following news item appeared: "The price of hops at Salem has jumped to 25 and one half cents...some growers are confidently expecting the market to jump another 4 to 5 cents, even though the present price is considered excellent, and by buyers to be on the high side. The fine quality of Willamette Valley hops has won that product an enviable reputation, and Oregon growers are contributing to the pleasure of beer drinkers in all parts of the world, since hops from this state are bought for shipment to the eastern breweries and for export to England and Germany."
