On this day in 1895 the battleship Oregon was launched at San Francisco, California and commissioned at a cost of $6,230,000. Under the command of Captain Charles Edgar Clark, "The Bulldog of the Navy" sailed 15,000 miles through the Straights of Magellan to Key West, Florida where she joined a blockade squadron in the battle of Santiago. On July 3, 1898, The Oregon fired the first shot in this battle and effectively engaged in sinking or beaching two of the Spanish fleet's cruisers. The Oregon became the squadron's flagship on July 4 and continued in service until 1919 when she was retired.
