On this day in 1871 the Weekly Mountaineer of The Dalles observed that road agents, the term for stage coach robbers, are "getting quite numerous in these parts...Winter is coming on and these poor devils are laying in their winter supplies. Persons traveling had better keep their eyes peeled and if possible carry their howitzers with them loaded with grape and cannister, ready to serve."
