George Vancouver On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1792 Lieutenant William R. Broughten, under orders from Captain George Vancouver of the British Royal Navy, left his armed tender HMS Chatham and with most of his crew in two boats, sailed up the Columbia river from a location opposite Astoria.

Off a point where a stream they named Barings River (Sandy River) emptied into the Columbia River, the party sighted a snow-clad peak which Lieutenant Broughton named Mt. Hood, in honor of Vice Admiral Samuel Hood.
