John Wesley Davis On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1854 President Pierce formally appointed George Law Curry as Governor of the Oregon Territory. Prior to this, Curry had acted as governor ex-officio, succeeding John Wesley Davis, the sixth territorial governor who was also appointed by President Pierce.

Unlike Davis, Curry was an Oregon resident having come to Oregon City in 1846 where he edited the Oregon Spectator for a year and then founded the Free Press. He served as governor until March 3, 1859 when Oregon became a state.

Curry County is named for him.
