On this day in 1866 Isaiah Mercer expressed his feelings at having a debt repaid in depreciated currency: "Whereas, one William Newhouse...did this day pay me in greenbacks without a requisite discount on the same, in payment of a rightful and just debt, for work performed by me, therefore I take this method of warning all persons from crediting under any consideration whatever, as they are liable to be swindled out of their just dues in the manner that I was. Believing that the public good demands that such rascality should be exposed, I herewith make this statement of facts. Isaiah Mercer."
