On this day in 1850 the naturalization of Hugh Byrne
of Great Britain was recorded in what is believed to be the first naturalization book for the Oregon country. The volume entitled, Declaration of Intention, Vol. 1 and was discovered in the Clatsop County Courthouse by a researcher of the Oregon Historical Records Survey. Several entries state, "...foregoing persons came before recorder and declared their intentions to be loyal to the U.S. and forsake allegiance to any other country."
