suffragettes On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1912 the long struggle to gain access to the ballot box came to an end in Oregon as voters across the state voted in favor of the Suffrage Amendment to the Oregon Constitution.

Interest in Oregon's battle for a woman's right to vote extended abroad as the election results were cabled just before midnight to London where 10,000 suffragettes were anxiously awaiting the outcome. Politicians reacted skeptically to claims that the feminine vote would drastically alter the order of things. "The hand that rocks the cradle will never rock the boat," they insisted.
