In March 1832 Nathaniel Wyeth departed Boston and marched overland to Oregon reaching Fort Vancouver in late October of the same year. Wyeth's intent was to establish a commercial and agricultural company on the Columbia River, but when his shipment of supplies failed to reach Oregon, he decided to return to Massachusetts. After a second overland trek, this time to the east, Wyeth arrived back in Cambridge, Mass. with two half-Indian guides on this day in 1833. Here he organized the Columbia River Trading Company to outfit a vessel that would sail around the horn and meet him on the Columbia River.
